D11: Summarizing

10/2: Summarizing and Introduction to Assignment

Hi Students!

Today's class will be focused on the start of Unit 2.

We'll start off by addressing the following questions in a group discussion:

1. What is a summary?

2. What does a summary do?

3. Why is a summary important?

4. How long should it be?

After sharing ideas, we'll read "So That Nobody Has to Go to School If They Don't Want to" by Roger Sipher. In the printed copy I have provided, while reading, circle words you do not understand and feel free to search online for their meaning. After, write a summary based upon the reading and what we have discussed so far and upload it to your Dropbox account.

Please refer to the Model Summary to compare your writing with this example. Being critical of your summarizing skills will be very important in this unit. Refer to the following handouts for further help:

1. Dos and Don'ts of Summary Writing

2. Summary Writing Checklist

In addition, I will introduce the Source Synthesis Summary Assignments, Guidelines, and Deadlines. Please see the Homework section for further details.

Thanks!
