9/11: Thesis Statements and Introductions

Hi students!

The focus of today's class will be on developing strong thesis statements. In addition, we will discuss the role of the introduction of your essay.

Please focus on the PowerPoint presentation: Writing an outline and thesis statement, but note that we will be stopping occasionally to complete the following activities:

1. Individually read the essay titled: Changing English: the African American Influence on page 57. What is the essay about? Are some of these words used in your country as well? What do you think the thesis statement is?

2. Please refer to the Thesis Statement Worksheet and try to answer parts 1 and 2 as best you can. We will discuss the answers as a group.

3. Read page 57 of the Thesis Statement Handout and identify the thesis statement for each paragraph.

Throughout the PowerPoint presentation, we will be explaining the importance of the introduction and how the thesis statement plays a fundamental role.
